Bedlington Hartford Hall Estate The Stables Former stable block to east of Hartford Hall

(Formerly listed as Gymnasium to east of Hartford Hall, HARTFORD, WANSBECK)

GV II Former stable block converted into apartments 2000-2004. North and west ranges early C19, enlarged with conversion of yard into covered exercise yard 1875, dated with initials A.E.B. (Augustus Edward Burdon) on pediment. Front tooled-and-margined ashlar, returns squared stone; graduated Lakeland slate roof to north and west ranges, Welsh slates to remainder.

North elevation two storeys, 1 + 3 + 1 bays. Plinth, rusticated quoins. Slightly-projecting pedimented centre has tall round arch flanked by lower segmental arches with four-pane sash windows above; all arches now blocked, with later windows inserted. Circular moulded panel in pediment encloses shield with date and initials. End bays have four-pane sashes; hip-ended roof with stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks. Six bay returns show C20 casement windows in older openings.

Interior: former covered yard has balcony all round, stepped up over former entrance arch on north, with shaped cast-iron bars and moulded handrail. Strapped king-post truss roof with rooflights.
