Description
The former stable block to the east of Hartford Hall was converted into apartments between 2000 and 2004. The north and west ranges date from the early 19th century and were enlarged when the yard was converted into a covered exercise yard in 1875, which is marked with the initials A.E.B. (Augustus Edward Burdon) on the pediment. The front features tooled-and-margined ashlar stone, while the returns are made of squared stone. The north and west ranges have a graduated Lakeland slate roof, and the remainder is covered with Welsh slates.
The north elevation is two storeys high and consists of one bay, three bays, and then one bay again. It has a plinth and rusticated quoins. The slightly projecting pedimented centre features a tall round arch flanked by lower segmental arches, with four-pane sash windows above; however, all arches are now blocked, and later windows have been inserted. A circular moulded panel in the pediment encloses a shield with the date and initials. The end bays have four-pane sashes, and the hip-ended roof has stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks. The six bay returns display 20th-century casement windows in older openings.
Inside, the former covered yard has a balcony all around, which is stepped up over the former entrance arch on the north side. It features shaped cast-iron bars and a moulded handrail. The roof has a strapped king-post truss design with rooflights.
