Description
The main farmbuilding group to the east of West Hartford Farmhouse is a planned group of farm buildings, dated 1861, featuring the initials MWR (Matthew White Ridley) on the centerpiece of the north range. The buildings are constructed from snecked tooled stone with tooled-and-margined dressings and have Welsh slate roofs, although the eastern part of the north range has been replaced with 20th-century metal sheets, and the side ranges have 20th-century tiles. The buildings have coped gables, and most openings are framed in chamfered alternating-block surrounds.
The ranges are arranged around a yard that opens to the south. The barn, with a pent engine-house on the west, extends north from the center of the north range. The north range is two stories high and consists of five bays; its projecting centerpiece is the end of the barn, featuring boarded double doors under a segmental arch, a datestone above, and a keyed round opening in the gable. Each side part has two pairs of segmental arches, with five windows above.
The side ranges are single-story, with boarded doors and part-slatted windows in the east range, and stable doors and slit vents in the west range. The barn on the north side has part-slatted windows and a cart entrance on the east, which includes a girder lintel, a segmental relieving arch, and a recess on the left for the original sliding door, along with a round opening in the gable. The engine house features a boarded door and a cart entrance with a timber lintel, as well as a blocked flue for a former chimney on the west side. There are two external stone stairs leading to boarded doors at the rear of the north range.
This farm was originally a planned cattle farm and was formerly part of the Blagdon Estate. Later sheds that fill the yard are not of special interest.
