Description
The Stable Block to the east of Swinburne Castle is a former stable block, now used for farm storage, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof, while the rear is made of random rubble. The building is two stories high and has nine bays, featuring rusticated quoins.
The central section projects and has a pediment with a round-arched, tunnel-vaulted carriage entry. This entry is framed by rusticated jambs and an archivolt with a curved keystone, and there is a keyed oculus within the architrave. On the ground floor, there are 12-pane windows, while the first floor has 6-pane windows.
The outer sections, which also consist of three bays, have similar windows, with the central ones set in round-arched recesses. A band runs along the first floor, topped by an Ionic modillion cornice. The roof is hipped and features a wooden clock turret above the archway, although the clock faces have been removed.
