Gateway, lodges and 14/29 walls at entrance to Swinburne Castle II*

Gateway, walls and lodges. Late C18. Ashlar with Welsh slate roofs. Cast-iron railings. Archway flanked by single-storey l-bay lodges and by quadrant walls with railings.

Archway has to each side a pair of engaged Tuscan columns with round-headed niches between. The capitals have sprays of oak leaves. Fluted frieze and cornice. Round arch in archivolt has ox skull with tasseled horns on keystone. Flanking rectangular panels with Adam-style rosettes and fans. Pediment above has cartouche with feathers.

Lodges have 4-pane sashes. Fluted frieze and cornice; and corniced parapet with blind balustraded panels.

Lodge inner returns have plank doors with pulvinated overpanels. Stone corniced end stacks and hipped roofs.

Low quadrant walls with chamfered coping topped by spearhead railings and urn finials to principal standards, ending in tall square corniced piers.
