Description

The war memorial opposite the Church of St Giles in Chollerton was built in 1921 and is made of sandstone. It features a cross with an ornamental head and a tapering shaft, standing on a rectangular plinth that has carved stone panels on the front and sides. The front inscription reads "CHOLLERTON PARISH / IN REVERENT AND GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF OUR MEN / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-19 / YE THAT LIVE ON MID ENGLANDS PASTURES GREEN / REMEMBER US AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN" and lists names from both the First and Second World Wars. The sides contain the names of those who fell in the First World War. The memorial is supported by a square three-stepped stone base, and another inscription on the front states "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." This simple yet attractive memorial serves as a tribute to the fallen from both World Wars.
