Description
Doctor's Cottage, located 40 metres north of Black Hedley Farmhouse, is a combination of a house and a lectern dovecote from the mid-18th century. The east elevation features squared stone, while the other sides are made of coursed rubble with cut dressings and a slate roof. The building is two storeys tall with an attic dovecote and has a symmetrical two-bay design. It includes a first-floor band, a moulded string course below the attic, and a parapet with a moulded cornice that extends to the returns and rear.
The central entrance has a boarded door with a chamfered surround, leading into a 20th-century glazed porch. Flanking the door are 16-pane sash windows set in architraves with a pulvinated frieze, and a band that steps forward to form a cornice. Above these, similar windows are found in plain stone surrounds, with smaller openings beneath each, featuring three tiers of four circular pigeon holes and alighting bands. The ends of the return parapet are broken forward above the string course. A pent roof is present, and the rear has a parapet with a central pilaster. The left return shows a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor, and the returns are capped by sculptured beasts, an otter on the north and a fox on the south, which are reputedly by Lough. The twin projecting stacks at the rear were rebuilt in the 20th century. There is a one-storey extension to the north that is not of interest.
