Description

This is an early 18th-century barn with an attached dovecote, located near Newmillerdam in Crigglestone. Originally situated approximately 20 metres north of Humley Manor, it's now found at Mill Farm Drive, alongside numbers 23 and 25. The barn is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, and portions of the original stone slate roof remain. The barn is a long, six-bay range with a large cart entrance featuring composite jambs and a segmental arch with skewbacks and a chamfered surround. To the left of the cart entrance are two original windows, each featuring deep lintels and tie-stone jambs, while other openings have been inserted later. Inside, the barn has a king-post roof with single-angle struts and trenched purlins.

The attached dovecote is situated to the rear of the barn and its roof runs parallel to the barn’s roof. It is three bays wide, with a central doorway featuring composite jambs, a deep lintel with a chamfered surround, and a two-light double-chamfered mullioned window to the right. A further two-light window is set into the gable. The dovecote’s interior has two bays occupied by a columbarium, constructed of handmade brick with numerous nesting boxes, and features a fish-bone king-post truss.

The structure was partly ruinous at the time of a recent survey. It represents an unusual survival of this type of building in the region.
