Description

Humley Cottages is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid-16th century and features a timber frame that was clad in stone in the mid-17th century. The building has a large dressed stone exterior and a roof made of stone slate and concrete triple tiles. It is single storey, but it may have originally been one and a half storeys. The rear of the building has an aisle and the main elevation includes 20th-century windows on either side of a canted bay. This bay has double-chamfered mullioned windows, consisting of a three-light window flanked by single-light windows on the angled sides, all topped with a hoodmould that has straight returns on the flanking wall. There are also two blocked windows set under the eaves. The roof is hipped with a central ridge stack and one stack on each hip. The rear features an aisle under a cat-slide roof, and the left-hand return has a doorway at the junction with the aisle. Inside, the attic has a heavy-scantling arcade-plate supported by a post with a brace to the plate. This building is considered unusual, if not unique, for the region.
