Description

This is a 17th-century cottage, dated 1654, as indicated by the initials BHL carved into the door lintel. It is a typical local example of a three-bay, two-storey house built with a timber frame and a skin of coursed, squared stone. Some timber framing is visible on the left return, suggesting a possible earlier structure beneath the stone. The front of the house is irregular, featuring four windows with small casements. One window retains its original stepped and chamfered stone frame. Original openings are also present on the returns. The cottage abuts a raised terrace at the rear.

Inside, the south bay displays chamfered beams and joists with long, tongued stops, with a main beam running laterally. Longitudinal main beams are found in the hall and service bays; the hall beams are chamfered, while the service bay beams are plain. Upstairs, an original stone fireplace is visible, featuring a Tudor arch. The roof is a king post design with substantial members, supported by through purlins on the sides, although the ridge purlin has been removed, and common rafters are now halved.
