Description

Courtyard Cottages, located approximately 200 yards west of Tillmouth Park Hotel, were built in 1825. They are constructed from ashlar stone and feature roofs made of Scottish and Welsh slate. The buildings form a U-shape with a long rear range extending further to the right and are single-storey.

The rear range has a slightly projecting central bay with a pediment, which includes a datestone carved with a quatrefoil and the inscription "F B 1825 M P." There is 20th-century glazing in the segmental carriage arch beneath this bay. The left section has three bays, featuring a boarded door and 12-pane sash windows. To the left, there is an open cartshed with a lintel.

The cottage on the left has four bays, with a boarded door on the left and three 12-pane sash windows. It has a hipped roof with two brick ridge stacks. The carriage house on the right is taller and consists of four bays, with boarded double doors set in elliptical arches featuring a keystone. It also has a hipped roof.

At the rear of the left cottage, there is a square, two-storey dovecote with a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor. The dovecote features pigeon entrances with six holes in a stone screen, which has a raised bolection-moulded surround and a shallow pyramidal roof.

The second cottage, located behind the carriage house, has three bays. On the north side, it features a pointed-arched door and two pointed-arched windows with intersecting glazing bars. On the south side, there is an arched doorway and two 2-light mullioned windows, each containing a 12-pane sash in both lights.
