Description
Tillmouth House is a former school and schoolmaster's house, now a private residence, built in 1879. The building is constructed of snecked stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in a 13th-century style. It has an H-plan layout with a short additional wing and a porch on the left side. The house is two storeys high and has five bays. The second and fifth bays project and are cross-gabled; the second bay includes a canted bay window on the ground floor with four arched lights, and a paired lancet window on the first floor with a trefoil above set in a blank arch. The fifth bay has a tall storey with three stepped lancets and three trefoils above in a blank arch.
To the left, there is a gabled porch that originally served the school, which now acts as the front door. The gabled roofs have flat coping, kneelers, and two ridge stacks topped with tall octagonal chimney pots. The right side of the building features a large window with three stepped lancets and trefoils above. On the left side, there are two bays with two tiers of paired lancets. A mid-20th-century canteen addition at the rear is not of special interest.
