Cottages, Foxhall, Edinburgh

The cottages at Foxhall, Edinburgh, date from the earlier 19th century and consist of a single-storey stable range and single-storey cottages with an attic, arranged in a T-plan to the southwest of the main house across the main avenue. The stable range faces east, while the cottages are positioned at right angles, facing north.

The cottages are two symmetrical, three-bay structures with a rectangular plan. They are built of sandstone rubble and mortar, featuring droved sandstone margins and quoins, as well as raised cills. The main elevation to the north has a central door flanked by windows, with a square dormer located above the door. Both the east and west elevations have a blind oculus in the gablehead. The south elevation features a large picture window that spans the entire rear wall of the west cottage, a square dormer at the center, and a small skylight to the left. The east cottage has a door in the left corner, a narrow window to the right, a square dormer at the center, and another narrow skylight to the right. The cottages occupy two bays of the rear range, which continues as the stable block. The windows are 4-pane sash and case, with 6-pane dormer windows, and there are plate glass and replacement windows at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring overhanging eaves and rendered coped ridge stacks.

The stables are a long rectangular-plan range, constructed of sandstone rubble with droved sandstone margins and chamfered arrises. The main elevation to the east has eight bays, with three bays on the right corresponding to the cottages. There are two boarded sliding stable doors grouped towards the center, along with a small door in the penultimate bay to the left, which is boarded and has a 4-pane fanlight. The rear elevation to the west includes lean-to corrugated-iron and rendered additions on the outer right. The south elevation features a gable with a boarded hoist door at the upper level. The glazing includes 4 and 6-pane sash and case windows, as well as plate glass casement windows. The stable roof is also covered with grey slate and includes skylights and overhanging eaves.
