Description
The Cottages at Groes Hall are a linear two-storey range that were originally lofted stables. They have been converted into two cottages, each featuring two windows, with a single window linking block between them and garages at the far right (east) end. Each cottage includes a small lean-to porch at the front and has lean-to and flat-roofed additions at the rear, constructed from stone and brick, with repairs made using concrete blocks. The main structure is built from rubble masonry laid roughly to courses, while the front elevation is roughcast rendered. The slate roof has a tiled ridge and slate copings, with the roofline stepping up to the right (east) of the middle entrance. There are two rendered ridge stacks along the range, positioned between the two windows of each cottage.
The cottages are situated on a slope, with the left cottage featuring a lower three-window range and the right cottage having a two-window range above. The lower range has a doorway to the right that leads to a passage serving both houses, and a lean-to porch with a side entry to the left. There are two small-paned casement windows on the ground floor and three similar windows in catslide dormers above. The upper cottage mirrors this design with a two-window range and a lean-to porch to the right. Beyond the cottages is a long blank wall of the former coachhouse range. The rear elevation retains small windows and some evidence of earlier openings that are now blocked. The lower cottage has a small lean-to, while the upper cottage features a brick outshut. The former coachhouse has a tall central doorway with a slate sill and brick jambs, flanked by wide openings; the left opening retains double doors with small-paned glazing, while the right has been infilled with brick. Additionally, there is a higher-roofed corrugated iron shed with a cart entry above.
