Description

The granary and cartshed at Groes Hall is a historic building that also includes a brewhouse and former kennels. The granary/cartshed is likely the oldest structure in the group, constructed from rubble masonry with rough dressed stone around the openings. The south wall and steps are made of brick, and it has a slate roof. The main facade faces the courtyard to the east and features three cart bays on the ground floor. The right bay has a shallow elliptical arch made of rough dressed stone, while the left bays have modern boarded doors with timber lintels. On the first floor, there are two pointed arched openings with rough dressed stone heads; the front openings are boarded with louvred and hit-and-miss shutters, and the rear openings are blocked with stone. Access to the granary is through a doorway at the east end, which has a shallow elliptical brick head and a studded boarded door with leaf finials on the wrought iron handle. This doorway is elevated by two flights of slate slab steps with stone risers, and the side wall of the upper flight is made of brick.

To the southwest of the granary/cartshed is an open-fronted, mono-pitched shed with stone walls and a slate roof, later divided into two bays by the addition of a central brick pier. Adjacent to the left is the brewhouse, which has a single window range of rubble masonry, a slate roof, and a brick stack with capping on the west gable. The door is offset to the right, with a single six-pane light to the left. To the west of the brewhouse are the former kennels, built of rubble masonry with a slate roof. This four-unit range has a door and window for each unit, with a stone flag floor in front; the far left unit retains a tall railed enclosure.

The granary features three roof bays supported by roughly chamfered queen post trusses with angled braces, while the brewhouse still contains the oven and boiler.
