Description

The cottages at Glenkill, Arran, date from the mid-19th century, while the adjoining cottages are from the earlier 19th century. The main farmhouse is a two-storey, Z-plan, three-bay structure, accompanied by a row of single-storey and attic cottages, which include one two-bay and one three-bay cottage. The farmhouse features painted stugged coursers with painted ashlar dressings, and the sides and rear are harled. It has a slate roof that is piended to the rear, with a base course, margined angles, and an eaves course. The windows are ten-lying-pane sash and case with painted ashlar margins, and there are ashlar-coped skews along with coped ridge and gable stacks. The cottages are constructed from painted rubble with painted ashlar dressings and have a modern concrete tile roof. They feature two-pane sash and case windows with painted ashlar margins and gabled dormers, as well as a corniced ridge stack and coped end stack.

On the front elevation of the farmhouse, there is a two-leaf panelled door at the center, which has an astragalled fanlight and a margined doorcase. To the right, there is a window on both the ground and first floors, and to the left, the gable is advanced with windows on both floors. The rear elevation includes a small window at the center of the ground floor, a stair window above, and a window to the left, along with a recessed bay to the right that has a single-storey pentice-roofed bay at the re-entrant and a window on the first floor.

The front elevation of the cottages shows the left cottage with a window and door featuring an astragalled fanlight and a dormer. The right cottage has a central door with a porch, with windows on either side and a further gabled addition to the rear that includes three flight holes. The rear elevation of the cottages has various windows and a modern box dormer.

The interiors of the buildings have not been seen.
