Description
Allenheads Church is a church built in 1825 by W. Crawhall. It is constructed of squared stone with rusticated quoins and window surrounds, topped with a slate roof. The church has a simple rectangular plan and features a lower, gabled west porch in a Gothick style. The building has a plinth and the south elevation includes four pointed, Y-traceried windows with raised keystones, most of which retain their original glazing, along with a sill band. The east end has a central three-light window with intersecting tracery, flanked by lancet windows, and is topped with embattled coping. The north wall has two smaller two-light windows. The coped west gable, with kneelers, supports a bellcote with a segmental arch. The west porch features a south door with a plain tympanum under a pointed arch with a rusticated surround. The north door, which has been reused from an earlier chapel, is set in a moulded and lugged architrave beneath an open pediment that displays a coat of arms and the date 1701. Inside, there is a west gallery supported by four cast-iron columns. At the time of the survey, the church was disused and most fittings had been removed.
