Description

Christ Church is a church built in 1830 by Woodhead and Hurst. It is constructed from coarse gritstone blocks, each featuring a punched finish and draughted margins, with finely tooled dressings and a graduated Welsh slate roof. The church is designed in a symmetrical Gothic style, comprising a rectangular nave and chancel combined, along with a projecting two-storey west porch.

The west gable front features a central bay that projects forward, with a central doorway set beneath an arch and hood. Above this is a two-light window with Y-tracery and a hood that returns to form a continuous dripmould. There are similar two-light windows in the flanking bays. The gable is coped and topped with a small square bell-tower that has three clocks and louvres beneath gablets, all capped by a heavily crocketed pyramidal roof. Four corner piers rise into embattled turrets.

On the north and south fronts, the church has a five-bay chancel and nave, with buttresses between each bay. The two-light windows feature Y-tracery and hoodmoulds with floral stops, and there is a repeated blank-shield motif along the eaves course. The east end has a central break with a five-light Perpendicular window, and the corner piers extend into embattled turrets.

Inside, the church is plain, with a gallery at the west end supported by four cast iron columns.
