Description

Underbank Chapel is a Unitarian chapel built between 1742 and 1743, with interior alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The chapel is constructed of coursed, squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof that has a central lead flat. It has a symmetrical facade with six bays across and three bays deep, standing two storeys tall.

The building includes a plinth and projecting quoins. The 18th-century panelled doors are located in bays two and five, each framed by matching ashlar surrounds that have plinth blocks, monolithic jambs, deep stone lintels with projecting keystones, and cornices. Bays one and six each contain a single light window on both floors, all set in square-faced surrounds with sill blocks. The central two bays feature tall round-headed windows in square-faced surrounds, complete with sill blocks, impost blocks, and tripartite keystones. Above each door is a keyed oculus. A moulded eaves cornice serves as the gutter, and the hipped roof has an ashlar stack to the left of bay one.

On the right side of the building, there are two-light square-faced mullion windows on each floor, with casements that have glazing bars. The left side has two tall windows that were inserted, blocking the original central openings. Inside, there is a gallery at the east end. In 1867, the pulpit was relocated from the south wall to the west, and the original galleries that surrounded three sides were removed. Further alterations occurred in 1921 and 1952.
