Description
The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints is a church built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with alterations made in 1842. It features horizontally-tooled stone, except for the west end, which has tooled-and-margined stone with ashlar dressings, and a Welsh slate roof. The church has a rectangular plan without aisles, and there is a presbytery attached to the east end. The 1842 west end includes boarded double doors set in a large moulded arch, flanked by two carved niches with corbelled sills that hold figures of saints. The gable is topped with an expanded-arm cross and a gabled bellcote featuring twin pointed arches and a Greek cross finial. Stepped diagonal buttresses support small pinnacles. To the right of the door, there is a copy of an 18th-century inscribed stone built into the wall, while the original is located in the adjacent graveyard wall. The south wall has five bays, a sill band, and 2-light Y-tracery windows with hoodmoulds. The north wall has two similar windows, with the eastern window blocked.
Inside, the church is plastered and features a three-sided apse beyond a pendant screen of three pointed arches, which have crocketed pinnacles in the spandrels. The rear wall is panelled and includes similar arches on paired rounded pilasters. There is also a moulded stone font. The church originally served as a chapel connected to Thropton Old Hall.
