Description
The Three Wheat Heads Inn is an inn dating from the early to mid 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century and an enlargement in the early 19th century. It is constructed from squared tooled stone with cut dressings and features a Scottish slate roof. The building has an L-plan layout and is two storeys high, divided into two sections.
The left section has four irregular bays, while the right section consists of two bays that form the original house. The right side has a renewed door set in a surround of irregular large blocks with a narrow chamfer, a 4-pane sash window on the left, and 4-pane sashes in stone surrounds on the first floor. The left bays were originally single-storey but were heightened in the late 18th century. This section features a renewed door with a low overlight in the center, two small windows on the left, and a 4-pane sash on the right. The first floor displays two large windows with pointed arches that hold later sashes, along with a smaller blind window between, all set in raised stone surrounds.
The building has coped gables on moulded kneelers, a stepped-and-corniced ridge, and stacks at the left end. The right part includes a short link bay with a vertical-panelled door and low overlight, as well as a projecting early 19th-century wing. The three-bay left return shows a renewed door left of center with a low overlight, and renewed 12-pane sash windows, except for the left bay which has 4-pane sashes. There is also a stepped-and-corniced end stack.
