Description
The East Cemetery entrance screen and chapel spire, built in 1878, served as the entrance to former twin mortuary chapels, which were demolished in 1971. The structure features rock-faced quadrant walls and a squared stone porch and spire, with cut dressings and cast iron gates. The design of the porch and spire is in a free late 13th-century style.
The entrance is marked by square gate piers that have chamfered plinths and moulded pyramidal caps, supporting double gates with shaped rails and moulded pyramid-topped bars and dogbars. The low serpentine quadrant walls are topped with arched coping. The porch includes a moulded arch with a string-course above, a quatrefoil panel, and a slatted belfry opening with a raised surround in a gabled half dormer at the base of the slender octagonal spire, which features two moulded rings. The side walls are supported by low diagonal buttresses and are swept back to the base of the spire.
This structure is a picturesque local landmark.
