Description

The main block of the Co-operative Society premises, built in 1920, features shops on the ground floor with offices above and at the rear. The building has an ashlar front, while the other elevations are made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof. It is designed in the Baroque style.

The building is two stories tall and has a front that is divided into two parts. The main section consists of three bays, a single central bay, and three more bays, arranged symmetrically. The central entrance bay has an open pediment and features fielded-panel double doors with a radial overlight, set in a hollow-chamfered round arch with a rusticated surround and a triple keystone. This entrance forms the base for a canted oriel window that has a 12-pane sash window and a moulded cornice. On either side of the entrance are double shop fronts with labradorite stall risers and decorative leading in the top panes, beneath a timber fascia board and cornice. The upper floor has 12-pane sash windows, except for one slatted window, all set in architraves with triple keystones and raised aprons. The ends of the building have pilasters with a decorative frieze below sunk nowy-headed panels, and there is a modillion eaves cornice. The roof is hipped to the left and features one corniced ridge stack. The right section of the front is similar but set at a different angle to align with the street.

The left return facing Bridge Street has four bays; the right bay mirrors the front, while the left side has 4-pane casements on the ground floor and paired 12-pane sashes above. The rear elevation has similar fenestration, with a single-storey loading bay featuring a segmental arch on the left side.
