Description
The Amble War Memorial Clock Tower is a World War I memorial built in 1925 by Will Burton, the council surveyor. It is constructed from squared stone with ashlar dressings and features white marble panels with leaded inscriptions, along with wrought-iron dwarf rails.
The tower is a slender, square, three-stage structure. Its three-stepped base supports the tower, which has angle pilasters, a stepped-and-chamfered plinth, and moulded strings. The dwarf rails, featuring knob-topped twist standards and twist rails, connect the front faces of the pilasters. On the lower stage, the north face displays twin panels in recessed chamfered surrounds inscribed with 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF AMBLE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918' and 'THE SITE FOR THIS MEMORIAL WAS GIVEN BY E.M. LAWSON-SMITH ESQ IN MEMORY OF HIS TWO SONS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR', along with an inserted plaque commemorating World War II below. The side faces have panels listing the names of the fallen, and there is a boarded door at the rear.
The second stage features tall slatted square-headed openings, while the top stage displays clock faces set in keyed surrounds. The parapet has moulded coping and square pyramid-topped finials at each corner. The clock tower was unveiled on Saturday, May 9th, 1925.
