Description
The wall enclosing the Church of St. Cuthbert, along with its gate piers and gates, was constructed around 1870. It is made of snecked stone with cut dressings and features wrought iron elements. The gate piers are monolithic, with a chamfered plinth and a chamfered set-back below cross-gabled tops that include trefoil panels. The double gates are adorned with scrolly ironwork featuring the initials "SC" for St. Cuthbert. The wall stands approximately 1 meter high and has arched coping. The eastern part of the north wall, which borders the former police station, is designed to be unclimbable, featuring fearsomely-spiked metal discs that rotate on a rail supported by moulded stanchions bolted to the coping.
