Description

No. 41 Queen Street is a shop with domestic accommodation above, built in 1837. It features tooled squared stone of near-ashlar quality and has a mixed green and blue slate roof, with stacks that have been rebuilt in yellow brick on a stone base. The building is two storeys high and has two windows.

The late 19th-century double shopfront includes a pair of pilasters on the right that support a frieze with three scrolled brackets and a cornice, while there is a single pilaster and bracket on the left. There is a moulded sill band on the first floor for the 12-pane sash windows, and a clasping pilaster to the right. The eaves have a moulded band. The roof is hipped to the right and features a ridge stack.

At the north side, there is a two-bay return. The left bay mirrors the front detail, except the ground-floor pilasters are paired at each end, and the cornice extends across the bay. The right bay has an altered sash window below and a 12-pane sash above, both with slightly projecting sills. There is a blocked door to the left with an inserted window above, a small slate-hung roof dormer, and a coped gable to the right with an end stack.

This building is part of the original planned development that coincided with the harbour, constructed by the contractors Sandersons.
