Description
The Vicarage, built in 1876 by Johnson & Hicks of Newcastle, is a Jacobean-style building located on Church Street in Amble. It is constructed of snecked stone with cut dressings, except for the south elevation of the outbuilding, which is made of yellow Ashington brick. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and features chimneys that have been heightened in brick. The structure is L-shaped and includes an outbuilding and a wall that encloses the rear yard.
The south elevation has two storeys and three bays. It features a chamfered plinth and a first-floor string course. The ground floor has two-light transomed windows, with two in the centre bay and a three-light window on the left. Above, there are three-light transomed windows. All windows are small-paned leaded casements set in moulded surrounds. The gables are coped and topped with finials on moulded kneelers, and there is a left-of-centre stack rising from the front roof slope. The left return has a three-bay layout with similar window styles, including a lower left bay with a hip-ended roof and a hip-roofed dormer. The taller gabled right bay features a four-light attic window. The right return includes a vertical-panelled door in a flat-arched surround with a dated lintel and hoodmould, along with a four-light attic window.
To the right, there is a yard wall that stands 2.5 metres high, featuring gabled coping and connecting to the end of the outbuilding, which was formerly a coach-house. This outbuilding has a 20th-century door in an old opening and a hipped roof.
Inside, the Vicarage features doors with five fielded panels in corniced surrounds, moulded cornices, and dado rails. There is a straight closed-string staircase with turned balusters, and the stairhead balustrade includes a contemporary stairhead gate.
