Description
Bishop Auckland Cemetery Chapel is a municipal cemetery chapel built in 1884. It is constructed from coursed squared stone with an ashlar plinth, decorative dressings, and a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The chapel features a nave with an east apse and a west porch topped with a spire, all designed in the Gothic Revival style.
The three-bay nave is distinguished by windows with trefoil heads and quatrefoil top lights set into a sloping sill band. Each bay is marked by buttresses that have two offsets. The polygonal apse includes lancet windows and a high hipped roof. The porch is notable for its high pointed open arches on three sides, with a prominent gable above the west entrance. The angle buttresses have three short offset stages, all featuring sloped coping. The third offset is adorned with pinnacled corners and transitions into the octagonal base of the belfry. The belfry stage is characterized by eight tall gabled arches and is topped with a high octagonal stone spire that has a wind vane finial. The gables are enhanced with gablets on the kneelers and moulded finials.
