Description
The walls, piers, gates, and railings at King James I Academy, formerly known as King James I School, were built in 1910 for Durham County Council. They are made of coursed squared stone with ashlar coping and feature wrought-iron railings and a gate. Low walls with flat stone coping run along the front of the garden to the lodge and continue to the entrance of the drive. Tall square piers of coursed squared stone are located at either end of the lodge garden, at the drive entrance, and at the terminating entrance wall to the south. These piers have ashlar plinths and flat stone coping. The drive entrance piers are set diagonally and have corniced coping topped with stone ball finials. The railings connecting the piers are in sections with a ramped top rail divided by lattice panels. The gate to the lodge features posts in lattice work, and the lower part of the gate has cross bracing.
