Description

The toilet blocks and storage buildings at King James I Academy, now known as Bishop Auckland Comprehensive School, were built in 1910 and underwent alterations around 1962.

These structures are made of coursed squared stone, featuring ashlar pilasters and dressings, and are topped with a Lakeland slate roof and grey ridge tiles. The buildings are arranged in a plan that consists of three linked structures, with the connections obscured by later additions. Each building has quoins, stone mullioned windows with moulded sills and ashlar lintels, eaves bands, and stone gutter cornices.

The exterior is one storey high and has a layout of 1:7:9 bays. The north elevation facing the drive includes rainwater heads dated 1910. The east building has one bay with a two-light window at the eaves and boarded double doors on the left side. The central toilet block features an open arched porch with keyed round-headed arches on square columns. This porch was formerly connected to a corresponding porch on the school building opposite, creating a covered way. There are 3x3-light windows at the eaves on either side of the central block. The porch has a hipped roof. The west building has a door with alternate block jambs and a flat stone lintel on the left, a two-light window next to the door, and another in the right end bay. Between these, four bays originally featured a Doric colonnade, which is now blocked with small high windows added. This area may have served as a cycle shed or playtime shelter. All visible returns of the buildings display open pediments on pilasters.

These buildings are included for their group value.
