Description

King's School (original block) is a school building constructed between 1854 and 1856, with later extensions and alterations. The original architect was F. Bellhouse. The structure is made of coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The main school buildings include a central full-height hall flanked by full-height classrooms, with a left-hand gabled range added in 1886. The entrance is located in a gabled porch to the right of the main hall, which has a three-light mullioned and transomed tiered window, along with a coat of arms in the gable apex. The left-hand gable features a similar four-light tiered window and smaller gables on the left-hand return. The right-hand range consists of a series of gables running at right angles to the main range, also with tiered mullioned and transomed windows. To the left and rear of the main range is the former headmaster's house, likely a later addition but in a similar style. The building appears to be L-shaped, with two parallel gables projecting to the left and a doorway in the angle. There is a canted bay window in the gable wall and a gabled porch, which may have been the original principal entrance, in the adjoining rear range.

Inside, the main school buildings have been modified with inserted gallery floors but still retain the original roof structure, featuring tie beams and principal trusses supported by cambered wall posts resting on stone corbels. Traceried timberwork is present above each tie beam.
