Description
Stanley's Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in 1871 and 1927, with some alterations and additions made in the late 20th century. They are constructed from coursed and squared rubble and feature heavy slate roofs. The buildings are arranged in four blocks that form three sides of a courtyard, designed in a Domestic Gothic style. The original structures make up the eastern and southeastern parts of the courtyard, while two additional blocks were added in 1927—one extending the range to Cumberland Street and the other positioned at right angles to it.
Originally single-storeyed, the almshouses have four-light mullioned windows with shaped lights on the outer walls, which were remodeled on the courtyard side during internal planning changes. They also feature shouldered lintels and two-light mullioned windows, with stone heads that have been re-used and re-cut. Gabled dormers were added to the roof in 1992, and the chimney stacks were reconstructed in the same year. A pointed archway with a castellated parapet connects the two original buildings and serves as the entrance to the courtyard.
