Description
Charles Roe House is a house, originally with offices, dating to circa 1700, with 19th-century alterations and 20th-century restorations. The building is constructed of brick with painted stone quoins and has a slate roof. It has a double-pile plan arranged over three storeys, with a five-window front and a central entrance hall, with the staircase positioned behind the left-hand front room. The main entrance features six-panelled doors with a lozenge overlight set within a stone architrave that incorporates a scrolled broken pediment. Sash windows have been reinstated, replacing a previous shop front, with further sash windows renewed within their original openings, each framed by a moulded stone architrave. An enriched eaves cornice is supported by brackets at the centre and at the angles of the building, and there are end wall stacks.
The interior retains a restored original staircase with twisted balusters, a swept rail, and dado panelling. Wall panelling and fireplaces remain in the principal rooms.
