Description
This building, located at 115, 115A, 115B, and 115C Chestergate in Macclesfield, is a pair of shops with an office above, but it was likely originally a dwelling. It probably dates from the late 17th century and was refronted around 1920. The structure is made of roughly coursed rubble with internal timber-framing, encased in brick, and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high and features a modern four-window range that may reflect an original two-unit plan. The shop fronts are from the 20th century, with a recessed central porch that has side doors leading to the shops and a central door providing access to the upper floor. Above, there are four casement windows. The rear elevation retains much of its late 17th-century character, with a truncated gabled wing to the left and a blocked doorway on the central axis. The wide wing to the left is likely a 19th-century addition. Inside, there are significant remains of the 17th-century building, including a splat baluster staircase and a queen post roof with wind braces. The bisection of the rear gable indicates that the building once extended further to the east.
