Description
This building consists of a pair of houses, now functioning as shops with flats above, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar in narrow courses, with random rubble on the sides and back, and features a slate roof. The layout is T-shaped, with a double-depth front range and a centrally placed two-storey rear wing. Tall square-headed staircase windows are located in each re-entrant angle. The building stands three storeys above cellars and has three bays. The central bay above the paired doorways features glazed blind windows with glazing bars. The doorways and windows are framed with plain stone surrounds.
On the ground floor, there are two shop fronts from around 1900, each with a central doorway set back between flat shop windows that have quadrant-shaped inner corners. The shop windows include plate glass below and two rows of small square panes above. Between the shop fronts, a flight of seven stone steps with nosings leads up to the paired front door surround. The doors themselves have six vertical panels, with the lower panels being fielded and the upper ones glazed. On the first floor, the right-hand window is a four-pane sash, while the left-hand window features a tripartite stone surround with glazing bar sashes, possibly a later 19th-century alteration. Both second-floor windows are nine-pane sashes. This building is marked on Jonathan Binns' map of Lancaster, published in 1821.
