Description
The Brown Cow Public House, located at 42 and 44 Penny Street in Lancaster, is a former pair of houses that have been converted into a public house and a shop. This building dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from squared and coursed sandstone, which is now painted, and features a slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan with a rear extension on each side. It stands three storeys above cellars and has two bays for each former house. The left side has raised quoins, and square blocks support the timber gutter. All openings feature sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. The ground floor on the right has been modified to include a shop front, while the left retains an original doorway and sash window, both with plain stone surrounds.
