Description

This is a house, now used as shops and a flat, dating from the 17th century, with significant alterations in the late 17th and early 18th century. It is timber framed with lath and plaster infill, and the front is now colourwashed brick with a brick string course and a deep plaster eaves cove. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks at the rear. The building has a U-shaped plan, and is two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. A mid-to-late 19th century shop front is on the right, featuring a late 20th century glazed door and bays with glazing bars. A central plank door leads to a through passage, framed with simple moulded wood. To the left is a half-glazed door in a simple moulded wood surround, and a 19th century canted bay. The first floor has two cross windows with glazing bars and gauged brick flat arches on the left, and a 16-pane sash and a canted bay with casements and glazing bars on the right. The attic has four late 19th and 20th century brick casement dormers. Inside the through passage, exposed framing is visible. The building also has an 18th century straight flight staircase with turned balusters. At the rear are various wings, some with framed gables and walls largely rebuilt in brick. One wing is roughcast. A tall, 17th century timber framed outbuilding linked to the rear has jowled posts, brick infill, a brick underbuild, and a tile roof. An 18th or early 19th century lias one-storey and attic range is also attached to the rear.
