Description
No. 57 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops and a flat. It dates back to the 17th century, with a front range added in the late 18th or early 19th century and further additions from the 19th century. The building features a timber frame with lath and plaster infill, while the front range and part of the rear are made of whitewashed brick, accented by a brick dentil cornice. The roof is covered with old tiles, and there are brick stacks inside.
The building has a through passage and is arranged in an L-shape, extended to a U-shape. It stands two stories tall with an attic and has a four-window range. The 19th-century shop fronts include two half-glazed doors with overlights set in moulded wood surrounds, along with three bays supported by shafts. The first floor has four-pane sash windows with shallow gauged brick segmental arches above them. The attic features three casement dormers. At the rear, there is a timber-framed wing that has been largely rebuilt in whitewashed brick. The interior is reported to have some exposed framing.
