Description

Talbot Cottage is a house, now used as a wine bar, a flat, and a separate cottage, dating back to the 17th century with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century. The building is timber-framed with plaster infill, with the ground floor being built out and plastered. It has a tile roof and brick chimneys. The structure is L-shaped, with two storeys and an attic, presenting a two-window facade. A 19th-century shop front has a 20th-century glazed door within a wooden doorcase featuring a pediment and pilasters with incised decoration, flanked by windows with glazing bars. A dentil cornice, fascia, and a lean-to roof extend across the entire front. The first floor has sixteen-pane sash windows set into the roof. Two dormers have three-light casements with glazing bars. A passage reveals some exposed timber framing. At the rear, first-floor timber framing is also exposed. A brick stack features three 17th-century star shafts and a 19th-century square shaft. Inside, there is an open fireplace, now divided by a bressumer with stepped stop-chamfered ends. Exposed timber framing and ceiling beams are also visible. An early 19th-century rear wing now functions as the separate cottage, and is constructed of rendered brick with a brick dentil cornice and 20th-century windows.
