Description

NU 02 NW CHATTON FOWBERRY MAINS

4/26 Farmbuildings to North of Fowberry Mains Farmhouse

GV 11

Farmbuildings. Early C19. A mixture of coursed and random dressed stone and rubble. Welsh and local slate roof. Two parallel single-storey ranges connected by a 2-storey range to form 3 sides of a square. The farmhouse (g.v.) completes the square. Less uniform buildings in centre. Left range contains stables ending in coachman's room with early C19 fireplace, 12-pane sash window and stone chimney stack. Similar arrangement in byres to right. 2-storey cross range has 4 segmental arches forming shelter sheds and a granary above with slatted wooden windows. In the middle, wallsforming yards, a turnip-chopping shed with segmental arch, a store with shouldered ashlar door jambs and another byre with 2 segmental arches. Many good wooden stalls and fodder racks.

The byres to the right rest on a plinth of boulders, seem to be coarser in stonework and may be earlier.
