Description

This milestone, located approximately 400 yards north-west of the Ottercops road end, dates from around 1829. It is made of sandstone and is painted white. The milestone has a triangular shape with a rounded back and stands about 20 inches high. One side is inscribed with "Otterburn," while the other side reads "Newcastle 5 miles" and "25 miles." This milestone marks a section of the Newcastle-Jedburgh Turnpike, which was originally opened in 1776, but this particular section represents a new line established in 1829.
