Description
Winter's Gibbet is a wooden structure, reinforced with iron at the base. It is a 19th-century replica of the original gibbet where William Winter was executed in 1791 for the murder of Margaret Crozier of the Raw near Hepple. Adjacent to the gibbet is the crossbase of Steng Cross, which dates back to the medieval period. This crossbase is made of sandstone, measuring approximately 36 inches square and 18 inches high, featuring a chamfered top. It has an oblong socket for a shaft, measuring about 18 inches by 11 inches.
