Description

This milestone, located about a quarter of a mile west of Raylees, dates from around 1829. It is made of sandstone and is painted white. The milestone has a triangular shape with a rounded back and stands approximately 30 inches high. One side is inscribed with "Otterburn," while the other side displays the distances to Newcastle (2 miles) and Jedburgh (28 miles). This milestone marks a section of the Newcastle-Jedburgh Turnpike, which was originally opened in 1776, but this particular section was established in 1829.
