Description

This milestone, located approximately 1000 yards south of Blaxter Cottages, dates from around 1829. It is made of sandstone and has been painted white. The milestone is triangular in shape with a rounded back and stands about 30 inches high. One side is inscribed with "Otterburn," while the opposite side features the distances to Newcastle (4 miles) and Jedburgh (26 miles), as well as a total distance to Jedburgh of 30 miles. This milestone marks a section of the Newcastle - Jedburgh Turnpike, which was originally opened in 1776, although this particular section was established in 1829.
