Description

Elm Court, formerly known as Pierremont, is a picturesque group of buildings located in Dentdale East, dating from the mid to late 19th century. Originally the home of Henry Pease, this structure exhibits Collegiate Gothic architectural style, constructed from coursed freestone with ashlar dressings. The buildings are mainly two storeys high and feature numerous gables.

The five-bay south front includes a central projecting square tower with battlements, flanked by four angle turrets topped with hat-shaped caps, and an oriel window adorned with perpendicular tracery. Other windows throughout the building are stone mullioned and transomed, with some featuring Tudor arches and dripmoulds, while others have glazing with margin lights.

Elm Court also boasts a range of colonnades with polished granite columns, some of which are paired, and elliptical arches that extend southeastward. This colonnade culminates in an open grotto or artificial ruin, designed with carefully arranged rough rocks, foliage, and mirrors set into the walls. This addition was completed in 1873, designed by architect Sir A. Waterhouse. Pierremont Hall, part of the complex, features an earlier, simpler north range that represents the original house before the Gothic enhancements.
