Description

The Woodlands is an early to mid-19th century villa. The original entrance front features two storeys and three windows, notable for its large proportions. A similar-style, two-storey, four-window north extension was added slightly later. The villa is constructed of pinkish brick with a stone first-floor band and plinth. The low-pitched, slated roof has eaves soffits and ridge stacks adorned with ashlar scalloped friezes and cornices. Sash windows with glazing bars, full-height on the ground floor of the older section, have painted stone or Roman cement lintels. A low Tuscan porch with a single patera in the frieze leads to a half-glazed door with a plain fanlight, set within a narrow architrave on fluted impost blocks. The three-bay south front is similar in style. Victorian alterations include a large, half-octagonal two-storey bay and a three-storey Italianate tower on the garden front, along with changes to the windows. A sunk basement on the entrance front incorporates wrought iron cages over the window wells.
