Description
The Memorial Hall at Darlington Memorial Hospital is a memorial building constructed around 1925. It is made of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a hipped Westmoreland slate roof, complete with four ridge stacks and a single side wall stack. Designed in the Neo-Georgian style, it includes a plinth, a first floor band, and a dentillated eaves cornice. The windows have been reglazed in their original openings and feature double keystones, with the first floor windows being smaller in size.
The building is two storeys high and has a seventeen-window range, with a square plan and extensions at the rear. The front range is of particular interest, showcasing a slightly projecting center with three windows, which are framed by Ionic pilasters beneath a dentillated pediment that contains a round window. There is a square porch with Ionic pilasters and a flat roof, also adorned with a dentillated cornice. Steps lead up to panelled double doors with an overlight. Above these doors is a window with a shouldered architrave, a cornice, and an elongated keystone. The side ranges display regular fenestration, with pilasters located three bays from each end and at the corners.
Inside, the central memorial hall spans two storeys and features a cross beam ceiling supported by Ionic pilasters, along with modillion cornices. There is a plinth and a first floor sill band, and the hall retains original octagonal pendant lights. The lower level has ashlar wall panels that list the names of the war dead, with similar plain panels above, alternating with windows at the front and rear. In the center of the hall stands a black marble plinth with a wooden pedestal that holds a book of remembrance.
At the rear, there are round-arched entrances leading to a cross corridor, which features keystones. The cross corridor has a plaster barrel vault and concrete dogleg stairs. The fully panelled boardroom includes Ionic pilasters and a dentillated cornice, along with a matching chimneypiece and a panelled overmantel.
