Description

Polam Lane Bridge is a footbridge that spans the River Skerne and was built around 1891 using steel, iron, and sandstone. It features north and south abutments made of coursed rusticated sandstone, each with impost blocks and topped by two pillars that rise above the deck, finished with moulded capstones. Supporting the bridge deck is a steel girder, along with two cast iron Corinthian columns located in the center of the riverbed. The deck is adorned with ornate cast iron handrails that have curvilinear supporting iron side brackets.

The bridge was constructed to provide access across the River Skerne from the end of Polam Lane to the newly built Victoria Embankment, facilitating entry to one of the main entrances of South Park, which was originally established in 1851 as Bellasses Park. The design of the bridge was put out to tender in March 1891, and it was built shortly thereafter. It is depicted on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1899.

Polam Lane Bridge is an important part of the historic landscape of South Park and meets the criteria for listing due to its role in providing access across the river and its distinctive decorative features.
