Description
Ladhope Bridge, built in 1889 by engineers Cunningham, Blyth and Westland and contractors Robert McAlpine, spans the Gala Water at Bridge Place. This single-span bridge features a blocked secondary span at the northeast end. It is constructed from squared buff sandstone with rusticated ashlar dressings and brick soffits. The deck slopes upwards towards the northeast, which is matched by a stepped stugged sandstone parapet with ashlar coping. There are buttresses at both ends, each topped with decorative cast iron lamp standards located at the southwest and northeast. Inside the southeast parapet, there is a recessed granite commemorative plaque. The approaches to the southwest and northeast are splayed.
