Description

The former Royal Bank of Scotland, now a public house, is a three-storey, nine-bay building designed by J & J Hall in 1923. It is symmetrically arranged in a classical style, with a corner site that features flatted accommodation above. The building has a round arched cavetto doorway at the canted corner bay, with a recessed balustrade, pilasters, and a curved hoodmould above the principal window. The ground floor has squared openings with voussoirs, while the first floor features round arched cavetto openings and square openings with recessed pilasters above. The exterior is finished in smooth dressed ashlar, with channelled rustication at the ground floor. A moulded string course runs along the first floor, with band courses on the second and upper floors that link keystones to the openings. There is a projecting moulded string course at the eaves, and the rear elevation is plain rendered brick.

The ground floor has fixed hardwood glazing, while the upper floors feature timber sash and case windows with vertical astragals at the first floor. The main entrance has twin leaf hardwood panelled doors, with painted panelled doors and fanlights on the sides. The roof is predominantly flat lead, with a small pitched slated section to the northeast and rendered stacks to the northeast and south with short cans.

Interior access is not possible due to unknown ownership, but it is noted that there is a finely detailed panelled timber lobby with glazed internal doors leading to the main ground floor space. There have been later 20th century alterations to the public house interior.
