Description
Glasite Chapel, built around 1842, is a former chapel and house located on Botany Lane in Galashiels. The building is now disused as of 2005 and features a single and two-storey, five-bay rectangular plan constructed from whinstone rubble. The chapel section has pointed-arch windows, while a semicircular stair projects to the rear, and there is a flat-roofed extension to the southwest.
On the front (southeast) elevation, the former chapel is situated to the right and consists of three bays, two of which have tall pointed-arch windows. To the left is a two-bay, two-storey house with two adjacent single doors. The windows throughout are timber sash and case, predominantly with 12 panes, and the chapel windows feature Y-tracery. The roof is covered with purple slate and has two gable stacks, one of which has been replaced with brick.
Inside, the layout has been somewhat altered to extend the upper floor into the chapel area, but some original finishes remain, including joinery and simple plaster cornices. The house contains a cast iron fireplace and stove, as well as a timber stair.
